Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics FKIE

Fraunhofer FKIE develops technologies and processes with the aim of early detection, mitigation and management of existential risks. A total of eleven research departments is working on this at locations in Wachtberg, Bonn, Euskirchen, Leipzig, and Aachen, each with different, complementary core competencies, enabling them to deliver systemic solutions. The institute covers all areas of national defense and security—whether on land, in the air, at sea, underwater, in cyberspace, or in space.

In close cooperation with strategic partners, the institute is dedicated to the entire data and information processing chain: from data acquisition using a wide variety of sensors, secure transmission via suitable protocols, and application-specific processing using algorithms and artificial intelligence, to fused situation awareness and decision support.

The data and information processing chain is embedded in three research topics which enables their use: On the one hand, the hardware must be protected against ionizing or electromagnetic radiation. On the other hand, the systems must be protected against attacks from cyberspace. The »human factor« is also of central importance to the work at Fraunhofer FKIE: The focus of research is on developing effective and efficient human-machine systems.

The portfolio is supplemented by scientifically based forecasting, analysis, and evaluation across the entire spectrum of technological developments for defense and security.

Advanced Solutions

The online magazine of Fraunhofer FKIE presents current research topics  and solutions for the urgent challenges of our time.

»Digitalization in hazard prevention«

What opportunities and potential does digitalization offer for security authorities and emergency forces? And how can Fraunhofer FKIE support them?

Quickly and Precisely Localizing Radioactive Material

Radioactive, chemical or biological substances are usually invisible in threatening situations and cannot be detected from a distance. Researchers at the Fraunhofer FKIE use specially equipped drones and robots to quickly and precisely localize radioactive sources.

9.1.2026

New alliance for defence and security research

The Central German Institute for Security Industry (MISI) and Fraunhofer FKIE are now working closely together in the field of defence and security research. The cooperation agreement was signed by retired Major General Markus Kurczyk, Chairman of MISI, and Prof. Dr. Christoph Igel, Deputy Director of Fraunhofer FKIE.
